Anna
University became a single affiliating university for
engineering colleges
in Tamil Nadu from August 1, 2012, when the State Government merged the
five regional Anna Universities of Technology (AUTs) functioning across
Tamil Nadu under Anna University, which was the state’s first technical
university established in 1978.
The Anna University was split in 2007 into regional universities located in
Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli in 2007, with a view to decentralize administration of
technical education
and create geographical proximity with affiliated engineering colleges.
At present, about 570 engineering colleges are affiliated to Anna
University (Chennai) and the 12 constituent colleges under Tiruchi,
Tirunelveli, Chennai and Madurai AUTs are constituent colleges under
it.
